Suddenly, popular culture became American Apparel. If you don’t know this store you definitely need to check it out! It has all the basics in bright, bold colors you would never find anywhere else.

Funny enough, almost every band is sporting it too!

So what can I tell you about this wonderful store and its wonderful clothes?

Not much… haha. There are stores in different countries across the world.

It is the largest clothing manufacturer in the United States. It is a vertically-integrated clothing manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer that also performs its own design, advertising, and marketing It is best-known for making basic cotton knitwear such as t-shirts and underwear, but in recent years has expanded to include tank tops, dresses, pants, denim and accessories for men, women, children, babies and dogs. The company is known for a number of progressive policies including promoting immigrant rights and labor policies the company dubs “sweatshop free.

What makes the company very interesting is they market all the stores individually rather than have them all the same clones of each other. The company tends to reject midtown, high-rent locations, and avoids in-mall stores.

Pretty cool eh?

They even opened a store in the online world, Second Life, whose clothes match their real life counterparts. Weird!

The company has very bold advertising, taking models straight off the street, from their stores, or from submissions from their website. They also make a note that they do not airbrush and rather show the models with all their imperfections and blemishes, making them a very real company.

Some of their advertisements have been criticized to be provocative and sexual, but honestly, I don’t find anything wrong with that… unless it is skanky!

Though some of their prices are a little steep ($50 for a plain coloured hoodie?! WOW!) they are definitely made of quality. Quoted from one of my friends, Heather, who sports a bright purple hoodie:

I’ve had this sweater for so many years and it’s been through a lot, and the colour still looks like it is brand new!

So for quality like that… who could say no? Especially since it is very stylish. And honestly, I’d pay $50 for a hoodie.

Have a mentioned a lot of bands wear it?

That is right, I collected pictures from band sites with a band member brandishing the familiar hoodie with white zipper and white pull-strings. It’s pretty easy to walk down the street and point out the very distinctive bright coloured, white zipper and pull-stringed zipper and mark it as American Apparel.

So who are these bands?

Forever the Sickest Kids, Building Rome in a Day, The Mission District, Cobra Starship, and Metro Station.

Speaking of Cobra Starship, I am totally digging them. And hell, they even have American Apparel on the front of their newest CD! Talk about totally rad!

And so I’m not just pimping out Cobra Starship, these are all great bands and should all be checked out!

So yeah, American Apparel is the total fad on the streets now, especially for fun pock rockers, and hoodie loving kids. Even for the more indie look American Apparel has cool dresses, and very sexy leggings.
